Ferris wheel at the Texas State FairThe Texas State Fair is one of the most exciting events of the year, and the 2017 Fair promises to be one of the biggest yet. The state fair has been running for over 130 years, and this year’s event is all about celebrating everything Texas. The 2016 Fair broke attendance records, and planners are shooting for even more attendees this year. With over 100 different exhibits and attractions, there’s something for everyone. Read on to learn more about what to expect at this year’s Texas State Fair.

Fried Everything
What would a fair be without unique and strange fried foods? The Texas State Fair has weird food in spades, ranging from traditional fair favorites to new and unusual bites. Meander over to the food stands and sample some of the fantastic creations available.
Dallas’ Fried Bacon-Tilla was a hit last year: strips of bacon deep fried into the shape of a tortilla shell and then stuff with meat, cheese, and other taco toppings. Or, try the Deep Fried Bacon Wrapped Tot Dog, which is pretty much exactly what it sounds like: a deep-fried bacon-wrapped hot dog topped with tater tots, chili, cheese, and jalapeno ranch. The year 2017 promises loads more new and interesting food finds so keep your eyes open.

Rides for All
Whether you’re looking for a thrilling ride or a kid-friendly attraction, the Texas State Fair has rides appropriate for all age groups with varying intensity. Popular annual rides include the Top o’ Texas Tower that takes guests 500 feet into the air for spectacular views of the surrounding area and the Texas Star Ferris wheel, which is the largest Ferris wheel in Texas with a height of 212 feet. Escape from the summer heat on the log flume, which is appropriate for kids and adults and ends in a cooling splash.

Free Events
While you should be prepared to pay for food, rides, and games, there are plenty of free events for guests looking to stay on a budget. There are live music shows that take place at various locations across the fair park, with a variety of different genres represented as well as local featured musicians.
There’s also a number of free events, animal performances, and stunt shows that are included with the cost of the ticket. Two of the favorite events are the annual pig race and the BMX bike show. The Chili, BBQ, and Dutch Oven Cook-Off is a must-see for food aficionados, and the fair typically puts out a published book of award-winning recipes every year from the variety of cook-offs held at the fair.

Beer and Wine Gardens
For adults looking for some rest and shade, the beer and wine gardens are the perfect spot to get away from the hubbub of the fair. The Magnolia Beer Garden offers local, American, and international beers while the State Fair Wine Garden has over 40 different Texas-made wines available for sampling and sipping.

The fair is held at the historic Fair Park in Dallas and will run from September 29th through October 22nd for a total of 24 days.
