Safety Features of the 2021 Jeep Wrangler

Jeep Wrangler has long held a reputation for off-road prowess, but did you know that the Wrangler has some of the most advanced safety features available? If you’re looking to upgrade your vehicle for more adventurous weekend off-roading, yet want safety on the streets, the Jeep Wrangler offers the best of both. Let’s take a closer look at the passive and active safety features of the Jeep Wrangler.

High-Strength Steel Body and Frame Construction

In 2018, Jeep redesigned the body and frame of the Wrangler, incorporating more high-strength steel in the construction. Jeep also used advanced high-strength steel in the A-pillar and load beams and hot-stamped ultra-high-strength steel in the upper cage structure of the Wrangler.

While Jeep still uses mild steel in the Wrangler’s frame construction, it upgraded the frame to include high-strength and advanced high-strength steels for a stronger, lighter result.  As a result, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the Wrangler’s body and frame construction a Good rating in 2021.

Driver-Assist Systems

Jeep has various driver-assist systems available on the Wrangler. These systems use optical sensors and radar to monitor the road around your vehicle, alerting you to potential hazards. In some instances, these systems will engage emergency brake support.

Now, you can add a forward collision warning to your Jeep Wrangler. This intelligent system uses radar and cameras to monitor the way ahead for potential obstacles and alerts you with visual and audio cues when it detects a hazard. If you fail to react in time, the system will engage emergency brake support to help mitigate or avoid a collision. In 2021 testing by the IIHS, the Wrangler earned a Superior rating on the system, which showed it avoided collisions at speeds up to 25 mph.

One of Jeep’s newer additions to the driver-assist suite, adaptive cruise control, uses similar technology to keep your Wrangler at a preset speed and distance while in traffic. The system automatically slows down the vehicle as the traffic ahead slows and speeds it up again when the car ahead accelerates. This system can even bring your Wrangler to a complete stop if necessary. With aA simple tap on the accelerator, the system will return to its preset speed and distance to the vehicle ahead. As a result, the system reduces driver fatigue, particularly on longer highway trips.

Jeep put sensors facing the rear and sides of the Wrangler for the blind-spot monitoring system, giving you eyes where you usually can’t see. The system alerts you with visual and audio cues when a vehicle approaches or enters your blind spot. This system helps you avoid an accident when changing lanes if a car occupies your blind spot.

Jeep employs radar-based sensors for its rear cross-path detection system that alert you when vehicles approach from either side while you drive in reverse. This system helps you avoid backing into another car in busy parking lots. It also alerts you to obstacles that you might not see, like a bike left in the driveway or a post in a dimly lit parking lot.

The Wrangler’s headlights can detect oncoming traffic or when you approach a vehicle in front of you. When the system detects these conditions, the headlights automatically toggle to low beams. Once the way forward clears, the system returns your Wrangler’s headlights to high beam status for better visibility.

Off-road enthusiasts love Jeep’s forward-facing camera, which is mounted on the grille. This camera sends a live feed of the road or trail ahead to your infotainment screen so you can see obstacles and avoid them. The rear backup camera also sends a live view from behind when the Wrangler is in reverse. This system also includes dynamic grid lines to help you gauge distance.

Further enhancing the rear backup camera system, Jeep’s ParkSense uses radar to detect obstacles in your path while driving at low speeds in reverse. You’ll hear audio alerts when you approach an object, allowing you to avoid backing into cars, fences, and things hidden from view.

Anti-Lock Braking System

Coming to a controlled stop under adverse road conditions has never been easier with Jeep’s anti-lock braking system. A vehicle skids when its wheels stop turning, reducing traction and control when you need it most. With Jeep’s ABS, you remain in control because the system pulses the brakes in an emergency stopping situation. This pulsing of the brakes allows the wheels to continue turning, giving you the traction you need to remain in control and come to a stop.

Electronic Stability Control

This intelligent system monitors your Wrangler’s actual path and compares it to its intended path. When the system detects that you have oversteered or understeered and departed from your intended path, it can apply the brakes on a specific wheel to compensate for the steering error and return your Wrangler to its intended path. In addition, the system can reduce your Wrangler’s engine power to assist in regaining control.

Advanced Air Bag System

Jeep takes safety seriously. In addition to using high-strength steel in the body and frame of the Wrangler, they also put in an advanced air bag system to help minimize injury and protect passengers. The system includes six air bags in both the front seats and side doors. When deployed in a crash, these air bags provide additional protection when passengers or drivers wear their safety belts.
